     On 5 October 1894, the following article was written in the Waterbury Evening Democrat:

          Almost A Centenarian
     Death of Fenton Phelan of Ridge Street at the Age of 97
     Fenton Phelan of 82 Ridge street, the oldest man in Waterbury and one of the best known Irish residents, died died at 2 o'clok (sic) this morning of the infirmities of age. The deceased was born in Ireland in 1797 and came to Waterbury forty-five years ago. He was an honest, industrious citizen and for a man of his advanced years was wonderfully well preserved, being in full possession of all his faculties until about two weeks before his death. He had a wonderfully retentive memory and could tell some interesting stories of the stirring scenes which took place in his native country during the time of his boyhood. He was six years of age at the time of the execution of the patriot Robert Emmet, and could tell more of the checkered history of Ireland for the first half of the ninieteenth century than can be found in some of the standard histories of that period. He leaves one son and three daughters, Patrick Phelan of Dublin street, Mrs. Mary Egan of Bergin street, Mar (sic) Elizabeth Kilbride of West Main street and Mrs. Sarah Dowling of Ridge street: The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon with services at St. Patrick's church and interment in St. Joseph's cemetery.4
