Dan Phelan became a baseball player. The following is information about the 1884 Baseball Season:
This is the first season of the Connecticut League, the first all-Connecticut professional League-also Connie Mack's first season in professional baseball (beginning a 50-year career as player, manager, and owner.) Mack played for Meriden, mostly catching and occasionally outfield. Daniel Phelon played for Waterbury, as regular first baseman- Waterbury won the League championship; Meriden was second.
The teams in the league were: Waterbury, Meriden, Hartford, New Britain, Willimantic, and Rockville.
The Waterbury lineup was mostly Irish, as was the entire league. For Waterbury, Burke was right fielder; Mellon, left fielder; Dailey, catcher; Magner, shortstop; Lovett, pitcher; Guest, second base; Allman, third base; and Phalon, first base. Phalon was a good hitter so in most games he hit fourth (cleanup).
Here are some brief accounts of some Waterbury games taken from the Waterbury American which had good coverage:
July 4 (Friday)-Doubleheader against New Britain. As was customary because of short distances, the first game was in New Britain in the morning, the second in Waterbury in the afternoon. Phalon batted cleanup in each game. He got two hits in the first game and two in the second game. In the field, he had 9 putouts in the first game and 10 in the second. The first baseman gets the credit for the putouts on ground balls that are hit around the infield. New Britain won the morning game 3-0; Waterbury won the afternoon game 6-0.
July 6-Meriden 1, Waterbury 0-Phalon had one hit and 14 putouts. The accompanying story said" Phalon made two brillian long-run fly catches and received two bouquets of applause." The story also showed league standings with Waterbury in first place with an 18-5 record.(They must have begun the season back in May)
July 9- Waterbury 13, Meriden 5-Phalon had 3 hits and 7 putouts. The story said "Magner played short stop without an error and Phalon at first base took all his chances finely."
July 14, Springfield, 3; Waterbury, 0-This was a nonleague exhibition game. The story said the team played one of its worst games: "Phalon is one exception; he played first base without an error having 17 putouts with 3 safe hits in out of 5 times at the bat."
July 15-Waterbury-18, Plainville-0 Another exhibition game. Phalon had two hits and 11 putouts.
July 16-Waterbury 11, Rockville 6-For some reason, Phalon batted ninth in this game after batting cleanup in every other game. He still had 2 hits and 10 putouts. Everyone on the team had a hit, said The American, but two each for Phalon and C. Dailey and three for Guest".
July 18-Waterbury-20, Hartford Foot Guards-2; another exhibition-militia units in various towns had their own amateur teams and their own league. Phalon got no hits and had 17 putouts.
July 21-New York (Giants)-7, Waterbury-6- exhibition game with a major league team. Playing second base for the Giants was Waterbury's own Roger Connor (Baseball Hall of Famer)-Phalon had 1 hit and 6 putouts.(Connor was the home run champion until Babe Ruth hit one out of the field, the first time ever done).
July 22-Waterbury-19, Naugatuck Blue Fronts-8, still another exhibition game. Phalon had 4 hits and 9 putouts, but he did make 3 errors which was unusual for him.
Aug 12-Waterbury-8, Bridgeport-3- nonleague game. Phalon had three hits, 11 putouts, and 1 error. Story said "Guest, Phalon, Kennedy, and Magner did rather the best work for the Waterburys."
Aug 15-Waterbury-13, Willimantic-3; Phalon had 2 hits and 12 putouts, no errors. Story said the "team had 3 brilliant double plays, one by solid old Punch Phalon alone".
     Aug 17-Meriden-2, Waterbury-0-Phalon-0 hits, 10 putouts, and 0 errors.
Aug. 24-Waterbury-15, hartford-8---Phalon 0 hits, 10 putouts, 0 errors---"For a great wonder, Phalon was the only man in the home nine who failed to make a hit; his striking out was a rarity. Most of the work of Phalon, Kennedy, Allman, and Magner, in handling and doing the visiting base runners was exceptionally fine.
Aug 24-Waterbury-8, Ansonia-2---exhibition game, no box score. Story said "Phalon making some ridiculous drops of easy balls at first." Also, this interesting item:"Second baseman Robinson of the Ansonias is a colored man, captain of the team, has a good voice and is an excellent ballplayer. He received great applause for several brilliant plays."
Aug 31-Waterbury-8, New Britain-4---Pahlon 1 hit, 7 putouts and 2 errors. (Interesting item: in another game between two Waterbury amateur teams, the Echoes beat the Clippers 10-8. Second baseman Phalon had no hits or putouts for the Echoes. The sports column did not say what time the New Britain game was, but it was in New Britain. The Echoes and Clippers played in Waterbury in the afternoon. So, either there was another Phalon playing ball or Daniel caught on with an amateur team when there was no professional game.
     Sep 7-Meriden-3, Waterbury-0---Phalon-0 hits, 8 putouts, 0 errors.
Sept 8-Detroit-3, Waterbury-2---exhibition game with Major League team. Phalon 1 hits, 9 putouts, and no errors. Another story in the sports column says Waterbury players Burke and Magner suspected of taking money from gamblers to throw games.
Sep 10-Meriden-11, Waterbury, 2----Meriden seems to have Waterbury's number. Phalon had one hit, 15 putouts, 0 errors.
Sept 11-Waterbury-6, Bridgeport-6----exhibition; tie because of necessity of making train or trolley scdedule. "The Bridgeports, led by their captain, rushed for their bag of bats and made off as soon as the ninth inning was ended. 'We must catch the train', he said." Story also said,"it was an off day for Magner, Kennedy, and even Phalon dropped a ball."
Sep 12-No professional game, but he was in an amateur contest:Watch Shop-15, Irving Block-14. For the Watch Shop, Phalon, at shortstop, had one hit and 5 errors. All told, the Watch Shop had 18 errors.
Sept 16-Waterbury-16, Jerseys-3---exhibition game. Jerseys were from Jersey City. Phelon had 3 hits, 12 putouts, and no errors.
Sept 24-Waterbury-6, Hartford-0---Phalon 2 hits, 12 putouts, no errors. " Lovett, Con Dailey, Magner, Phalon, and Kennedy distinguished themselves by specially brilliant work." In the state league, Hartford lost every game against Waterbury.
Oct 12-Meriden-9, Waterbury-1--even though this was a post season exhibition game, Waterbury was still jinxed by Meriden. Phalon had no hits, 10 putouts, and 0 errors.
Final league standings: Waterbury-34-18; Meriden 25-22; Rockville 22-25; Hartford 20-27; New Britian 17-30. Willimantic dropped out in August.
Overall, it appears that Phalon was one of the best players on the team. He both hit and fielded well and won praise from the sportswriter from The American. Late in the season his hitting fell off, but that happens with many players. And the mostly few errors he made were when he was playing in exhibition games.
